I recently installed two new glass dome type ceiling fixtures in my hallway. The fixtures require 2--60W bulbs. Once I installed the incandescent bulbs and turned on the light, the fixtures became so hot, it was impossible to touch them. I would estimate that they were at least 300 degrees F. I was worried that they were going to catch the ceiling on fire! I decided to explore alternative bulb types and recalled that the LED bulbs on the market were improved over previous years. Researching on Amazon, I found these bulbs and decided to order them. I actually also ordered a box of 60 watt equivalent LED bulbs from another manufacturer at the same time. When the bulbs arrived (in 2 days due to Amazon Prime-love it), I quickly replaced the 60W incandescent bulbs with the 60W LED bulbs from the other manufacturer (after letting my light fixtures cool down so I could remove the covers) . The light was much, much brighter than before, and it was too bright and made the hallway seem like it was illuminated with a shop light. So I took those bulbs out and put in these 40W equivalent bulbs--2 in each fixture, replaced the opaque frosted-glass domes and the lighting is prefect and has the same color as a soft-white incandescent bulb. The tops of these bulbs are plastic (surprise). They are very light-weight. The bulb does get warm/hot right at the narrow part above the metal screw base. This is apparently where the action happens and it is surrounded by some white ceramics. It is not too hot to touch though and with 2 of them in the fixture, the glass dome is room temperature and the metal base of the light fixture, which is what is pressed against the ceiling, is barely warm. I am SO, SO happy I am going to buy more of these and use them throughout my house. Note: I did use the 60W equivalent LED bulbs in some lamps with shades--they still are a little brighter than I would like even with the lamp shades, so you might just want to get these 40W equivalent bulbs for all your fixtures.
